'Desktop Richie for Prime Minister!'

05/09/2001

"No sooner had the little fella burst onto our screens – on July 5 - than he was lovingly adopted by Benaud fans throughout the globe as he took the worldwide web by storm. In a summer of more than 12,000 emails it was the impassioned correspondence to Desktop Richie that really caught the eye.

As the ensuing emails will bear out he became a friend, a confidant, a dietary guru and an endless source of ribaldry, tickling online cricket fans with his dry humour and introducing the world to his unique brand of Richie-speak.

It would seem, without wishing to downplay any other aspect of the C4 coverage, that he was quite simply the hit of the summer."

"We stay well away from the traditional games format," explains Mark Ripley, previously of seminal games publisher Ocean but now chief executive of Cheshire-based start-up Friendly Giants. "The mainstream audience doesn't have the time or the inclination to sift through instruction manuals. They want to play a game on their mobile phones while travelling to work, play games on their PCs during the lunch hour, then maybe play something quick on TV before Coronation Street starts."

Lets Buy It.com Party Ant

09/08/2001

The Party Ant has been very successful for LetsBuyIt.com in their latest marketing campaign:

"The little fella did go live on our site during our marketing campaign - he was included in the most successful newsletter we've sent out to date and obtained the highest click through rate of 1.63%."

They intend repeating the campaign later in the year and we know
he will be on hand to boost the response.

Mad for it ... Richie wows 40,000 cricket fans

09/08/2001

The desktop Richie certainly seems to be entertaining more cricket fans than England at the moment, according to the Channel 4 website ( http://www.cricket4.com/news/nr_2273.html).

'Nervous office managers the nation over are bracing themselves for scenes of unbridled disruption as the 3rd Ashes Test at Trent Bridge draws near.

With downloads of Desktop Richie exceeding 40,000 and climbing by the minute, it seems no workplace is safe as word of the virtual phenomenon of the summer spreads like wildfire.

Without warning, normally subdued workers were said during the 2nd Test at Lord's to break into rapturous recitals of the little man's marvellous commentaries, prompting team leaders to lose their rag and Desktop Richie inventors to call for nationwide calm.

"There's no right or wrong way to enjoy Desktop Richie, bit it's fair to say we've underestimated the effect his live updates have had on his fans," a concerned spokesman said.

"For those who feel incapable of self-control when Desktop Richie shrieks 'goddim' to signify the falling of yet another Australian wicket, we can only recommend that you take a deep breath and check the scorecard."'

Friendly Giants on Happypuppy.com

20/06/2001

What they say about us on happypuppy.com: "The developers at Friendly Giants are busy programming new games to keep you addicted to Java. They are also working on a program that will allow the average gamer, maybe even a few below-average folks, to design WAP games."

"Sheeps is a new game for the problem-solving crowd. At the top of each level you are given a set number of building blocks and required to use these materials to save a specific number of sheep. This sounds easy until the sheep start falling. Each level offers a new environment and unique obstacles. I've been straining my brain all week trying to solve these levels."

The Register rounds up election games

11/06/2001

In their election games round-up, The Register puts our game first and has the following to say: "The election has been uninspiring, but at least the creative among us have knocked out a few good games for the peasants to play when it all gets too much. We've covered most of the games before, but just to remind you all."

"Tory Invaders - an interesting take on space invaders. Be Tony Blair and blast cascading hordes of Tories. Hit the Thatcher mothership for extra points."

FG in the Guardian

26/05/2001

Bibi van der Zee of the Guardian writes on the Election: "Is there anything pure left out there? Probably not - but who cares? Just get into Election Invaders at friendlygiants.com. It's a fantastic game in which you choose the party you're voting for. If you choose Labour, you become Tony Blair' head, protecting him against Hagues, Portillos, Maggies and the odd flying sheep. It's all jolly unnerving, and may be the only place a Tory victory is conceivable."

Ananova gets friendly

She likes our games ...see what Ananova has to say about Election Invaders. She comments, "Labour supporters can choose to shoot a swarm of Hagues, Portillos and Widdicombes. Tories can blast animated Blairs, Browns and Prescotts. Bagging an elusive Harold Wilson or rogue Margaret Thatcher nets players a bonus score."
