Mad for it ... Richie wows 40,000 cricket fans

09/08/2001

The desktop Richie certainly seems to be entertaining more cricket fans than England at the moment, according to the Channel 4 website ( http://www.cricket4.com/news/nr_2273.html).

'Nervous office managers the nation over are bracing themselves for scenes of unbridled disruption as the 3rd Ashes Test at Trent Bridge draws near.

With downloads of Desktop Richie exceeding 40,000 and climbing by the minute, it seems no workplace is safe as word of the virtual phenomenon of the summer spreads like wildfire.

Without warning, normally subdued workers were said during the 2nd Test at Lord's to break into rapturous recitals of the little man's marvellous commentaries, prompting team leaders to lose their rag and Desktop Richie inventors to call for nationwide calm.

"There's no right or wrong way to enjoy Desktop Richie, bit it's fair to say we've underestimated the effect his live updates have had on his fans," a concerned spokesman said.

"For those who feel incapable of self-control when Desktop Richie shrieks 'goddim' to signify the falling of yet another Australian wicket, we can only recommend that you take a deep breath and check the scorecard."'

Morning Everyone - desktop Richie Benaud

05/07/2001

Channel 4 has unleashed Desktop Richie, a cartoon companion to its TV Ashes coverage. Office-bound cricket fans can download the application from the station's 4Cricket website.

A beaming, pint-sized Richie wanders onto your desktop to let you know every time there's a wicket or a century has been reached.

See this story on the web at http://www.ananova.com or download the toy from the Channel 4 website: http://www.cricket4.com/tv/richie.html

Friendly Giants on Happypuppy.com

20/06/2001

What they say about us on happypuppy.com: "The developers at Friendly Giants are busy programming new games to keep you addicted to Java. They are also working on a program that will allow the average gamer, maybe even a few below-average folks, to design WAP games."

"Sheeps is a new game for the problem-solving crowd. At the top of each level you are given a set number of building blocks and required to use these materials to save a specific number of sheep. This sounds easy until the sheep start falling. Each level offers a new environment and unique obstacles. I've been straining my brain all week trying to solve these levels."

The Register rounds up election games

11/06/2001

In their election games round-up, The Register puts our game first and has the following to say: "The election has been uninspiring, but at least the creative among us have knocked out a few good games for the peasants to play when it all gets too much. We've covered most of the games before, but just to remind you all."

"Tory Invaders - an interesting take on space invaders. Be Tony Blair and blast cascading hordes of Tories. Hit the Thatcher mothership for extra points."

Take a look for yourself ...

FG in the Guardian

26/05/2001

Bibi van der Zee of the Guardian writes on the Election: "Is there anything pure left out there? Probably not - but who cares? Just get into Election Invaders at friendlygiants.com. It's a fantastic game in which you choose the party you're voting for. If you choose Labour, you become Tony Blair' head, protecting him against Hagues, Portillos, Maggies and the odd flying sheep. It's all jolly unnerving, and may be the only place a Tory victory is conceivable."

Ananova gets friendly

20/05/2001

She likes our games ...see what Ananova has to say about Election Invaders. She comments, "Labour supporters can choose to shoot a swarm of Hagues, Portillos and Widdicombes. Tories can blast animated Blairs, Browns and Prescotts. Bagging an elusive Harold Wilson or rogue Margaret Thatcher nets players a bonus score."

java.sun.com article featuring FG Chief Executive Mark Ripley. Mark Ripley and Jay Minn are real-life heroes who win real-life praise the old fashioned way. They earn it.

Election Invaders - Friendly Giants get political

15/05/2001

"...the best election game by a landslide ..." writes Matt Kelly of The Mirror, "fire lasers out of tony Blair's head at hordes of advancing Hagues, Portillos and terrifying Widdecombes (is there any other kind?)"

In the interests of democracy we have developed both a Labour Invaders and a Tory Invaders so whatever your leanings you can cast your vote and check to see how your input has affected the swingometer. It's certain that politics has never been so much fun.

Democracy Invaders

24/11/2000

As President Clinton stands down we stand back and gaze in awe as the workings of democracy unravel themselves.

Never mind though, here's the latest shoot 'em up from Friendly Giants: Democracy Invaders. Showing how quickly we can rebrand one of our games to reflect current events this version of the classic space invaders has all the thrills of the American political system.

One game that the censors will definitely think contains too much Gore ... don't beat about the Bush, cast your vote now!

Tech Demo of new 3D Java Engine added to site

15/11/2000

We have now added a demonstration of our amazing Java 3D Engine, the Friendly Giants Modeller (FGM) for you to try out. Click here to go to the demo page.

The flexibility of the engine makes it capable of high quality rendering in static situations or with only slight decrease in quality, it can be used in real-time applications. The current engine supports flat and gouraud shading. Three mapping modes are available: texture, light and environment.

Textures can be projected from the front, top or cylindrically. Both light and environment textures use sphere maps. The engine incorporates basic ray-trace routines, which are currently used to produce shadows, and in the future could be used for true reflection and refraction effects.

Models can be loaded from 3d Studio files or created from the FGM primitives. Effects like transparency, anti-aliasing and camera flares, give the final output that little extra. For real-time use of the engine, collision detection and physics routines have been implemented.

19/10/2000

Bruce Marshall has been appointed Financial Director to the company.

Bruce has worked in accountancy for over 25 years. He will continue to run his own accountancy practice alongside his role as Friendly's FD. Bruce helped BSoftB Technologies plc to float successfully on AIM in April of this year and it is hoped will be able to help Friendly do something similar within the near future.

Bruce is a games addict who in the past has written games reviews for ST User (remember them?) and helped to host Commodore 64's adventure helpline. He claims to have completed every Infocom, Level 9 and Sierra adventure game but he cannot finish Perfect Dark.

FG create new web design company - 'friendly'

02/10/2000

friendly is a new addition to the Friendly Giants family, set up to offer innovative design for both the internet and traditional print. We have had many customers requesting this service but felt we could not do so until we had the right people in place.

Nicola Teece, Andrew Greenwood and Julian Mckenny have extensive and varied experience ranging from web and traditional print design, information architecture, illustration, computer education, publishing and photography. We feel that the added benefit of being able to offer, re-brand and integrate games from the Friendly Giants portfolio into a client's site is a huge bonus.

We can offer a complete web design service, including consultancy, and design eye-catching sites which utilise database driven solutions whilst ensuring that navigation is straightforward, content engaging and the experience of visiting the site worthwhile and repeatable.

Bigger Studios - Better Games!

04/08/2000

At last, we no longer have to form overly intimate relationships with our colleagues, their desks, monitors and keyboards or attempt to ration fresh air between us!

We've moved across the corridor. No one knows how we managed to shoehorn ourselves into our previous studio space, but we need no longer worry. Our new offices are such a breath of fresh air (in more ways than one); we can now watch the barges chug by on the Macclesfield canal, enjoy the views of the hills and fall under the watchful gaze of White Nancy*.

Friendly Giants now occupy two studios, one for development, the other for creative. In the near future we're opening a third which will be ideal for further expansion of the business. We've even got a Delongi coffee machine and a meeting room to go with it so we can entertain our clients in the manner they are accustomed to. Finally, not forgetting that it should be fun to come to work, we're in the process of creating a games room, strictly for lunchtimes and after hours, of course! (*What or who is White Nancy? E-mail us to find out!)
